Questions About Mastering

Should I go to genre specific mastering studios?

One of the new trends of the internet age is the "Online Mastering Studio" phenomenon.  Along with that there are sites like "The Hip Hop Mastering Studio" and things of the like.  Make no mistake, the majority of these studios don't have the gear or experience to do a great job.  Great studios are usually eager to show off their gear and studio.  Any real mastering studio can master any type of music.  Plain and Simple.

How do I choose a studio, and do I have to be present for the mastering session?

I, as well as many other engineers do not believe it is necessary to be present for a mastering session.  Aside from dictating what you want the record to sound like, mastering is not really an art that is open to interpretation.  It either sounds right, or it doesn't.  It is either balanced or it's not.  It's either loud enough or it's not.  Most studios recommend submitting three records that you like the sound of along with your master.  I believe this method has varying tendencies, and ultimately, if a record sounds great, it is great.

How do I choose a studio, and how do I know which one is best?

This is a tough question to answer.  References are hard to come by for such an art.  Sometimes, just because one artist was satisfied, it doesn't mean another will.  Also, album history is not always the best tool either, because many times the studio gets credit, and not the engineer.  If an engineer has great credentials, and a great studio, chances are the masters will come out great.

How will I know if my record is loud enough?

Once again, this topic is shrouded in mystery and conjecture.  Master with us and it will be loud.

What is dithering?

In our opinion, all dithering sucks.  I say it's better to just avoid the dither at all costs...

How will I know if my master is great?

There are certain records that seem to sound great everywhere.  The Beatles Abbey Road and Guns and Roses Use Your Illusion come to mind.  I'm sure you can think of a few.
